Attending Cultural Ceremonies
Answer
Cultural ceremony is one of the most unique and the strongest traditions in Tana Toraja. Rambu Solo' or the funeral ceremony and Rambu Tuka' or the thanksgiving ceremony are two main cultural ceremonies. Visitors are welcomed to attend these ceremonies. However, there are some points that the visitors must notice :
- If it is possible, use a guide to show you the way, to answer all your curiosity and to help you arranging everything in the ceremony location so you don't get lost and get confused.
- Wear appropriate and polite clothes. Wear long or short sleeves and trousers. In a funeral ceremony, put on dark colours or black clothes.
- Bring a liitle donation for the thankful or the moaning family. 2 or 3 kilograms of white sugar or a big package of cigarette is usually preferable. For thanksgiving ceremony, a little money is sometimes okay.
- When you take pictures avoid disturbance to the procession of the ceremony since it can result in the negative attitude from the family. Take the position which is free but not disturbing.
- As long as it is possible don't refuse any service from the family such as a little coffee or some cookies.
